Mangalsen is the districtheadquarters of Achham district, andit is 930 kilometers from Kathmandu.It is eight hours walk fromSanfebagar, a settlement inAchham which has a domesticairport. A seasonal road exists fromSanfebagar to Mangalsen, but it isoften closed during the monsoon.However, a bridge under constructionin Sanfebagar across the BudhigangaRiver, upon completion will allowvehicles to cross the river evenduring the high flood season makingaccess easy between the airport anddistrict headquarters.



The major ethnic groups in thedistrict are Chhetris of Kunwar,Swnar, Rawal, Bogati, Khati, Rokka,Khatri, Kathayat, Bhandari, Bista,Batala, Saud, Dhami, Bohara, andThakulla castes. There are alsoBrahmins with Devkota, Bajagain,Dhungana, Regmi, Joshi, Rijal,Bhattarai, Bista, Dhakal andMudbhari castes.

The cultural heritage of this district issimilar to that of Doti. The importantaspects of the cultural heritage are thedances such as Narsinga, Jhayali andDeuda, These dances are typical tothis area, and performed during majorfestivals.



There are several important religiousplaces along the bank of the holy riverBudhiganga, and along theconfluence of Budhiganga andSaraswati. These are described in theSkandaPuran, one of the holyscriptures of the Hindus. They havepotential scope for the development ofreligious tourism in Achham.
